Buffalo, NY (WKBW) — The Buffalo Skyway was used today for a different type of traffic: bicycles.
More than 1,400 people participated in GObike’s annual SkyRide. This Skyride offers the cyclist his once-a-year opportunity to experience Buffalo’s iconic scenery.
The event welcomed all levels of biking experience.
“We definitely have a cycling community here in Buffalo, and it’s a very tight-knit community,” said longtime cyclist and Skyride participant Ryan McPherson. “But there are always new people, lots of families, lots of people introducing kids to urban cycling.”
One newcomer, James Lai, said a colleague persuaded him to join the fun.
“We’re actually very excited to be able to explore Lake Erie,” Lai said. “It’s great, especially running with all his colleagues.”
The first event of the day featured the new addition of this year, the SkyRace, allowing competitive and experienced cyclists to race the skyway.
The skyride started soon after, allowing bikers to ride at a leisurely pace to appreciate the beauty of the city.
“When you’re driving over the skyway at 55 miles an hour, slowing down to see the city towering behind you and the historical significance of being on the water that truly made Buffalo… I can’t,'” McPherson said.
The event was held on 716th Day, a celebration of the City of Buffalo.
“I’m not originally from Buffalo, so attending local events gave me a sense of belonging,” Lai said.
The Skyride ended with an after party filled with food, drink and music.
