“It feels great to release music again.” John Basley KK. “Songs like ‘Beneath The Rose’ in particular, we started writing in 1999. “Gold & Gray” Session about 6 years ago.During those sessions the song never worked, but when I started writing “concrete”, one of the first things I did was pull out the retired main guitar riff to see if I could breathe new life into the bones of this song. “Beneath the Rose” combined with “Last Word” “concrete”, a sort of mission statement that hints at the broad musical territory we cover throughout the rest of the album. It is also part of a trilogy of songs that also includes “Choir” and “The Dirge”. “
We will continue the DIY spirit infused into our next album, Video. “Under the Rose” It was independently produced by the band and edited by the band. John Basley and Nick Jost. Similarly, “The last word,” First single released from “concrete”,feature is, Nick Jost– Created clips.
“It’s pretty much what we decided to create and produce. stone We’ve adopted a similar DIY attitude with our videos ourselves. “ add Baisley. “This is the second in a series of videos that we shot, directed and edited ourselves. It is an exciting and creative process that utilizes elements of photography, stop motion, animation and traditional video.I’m interested in how far I can go with this “concrete” The video project series relies heavily on finds, the local environment, and apparently limited lighting, video and photographic equipment.just like everyone else Baroness It’s great to be able to further expand our creative vision and capabilities through projects. “
Baisley Comments about the album: “Important through line Baroness We don’t like repeating ourselves. It’s all about willingness to take risks. When I was younger, the point of music was something different, it wasn’t about doing the same thing, it wasn’t about listening to your parents or following the rules. It’s kind of silly, but it actually works. It’s terrifying to think that when you’ve achieved the sixth record in your career, you have to keep chasing your history instead of constantly inventing. So we focused on continuous invention to see where we were headed. I think this record reflects that well. “Stone” is more lively and more direct. “
That spontaneous evolution brought the band, now a fusion of Philadelphia and Brooklyn, to the border town of Ballyville, New York.choose a produce “concrete” themselves, members Baroness I spent a month tucked away in a vacation rental that became an impromptu recording space surrounded by pine trees, with large vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, and brick and glass walls. while they were writing “concrete”, Baisley Recorded and premixed in real time and turned on each song “concrete” Proprietary sonication. After the group finished chasing drums, guitars and bass, they put everything back together. BaisleyRecord vocals in a basement studio before handing off the album to the mixmaster Joe Balesi (Qius, tool) and mastering guru Bob Ludwig (led zeppelin, nirvana).
“The recording process was completely self-contained.” add drummer Sebastian Thomsen. “The four of us in a rented house in the mountains for a month resulted in a cohesive and authentic sound as well as a strong collective spirit.”
“I think we were able to strip it all down on this record.” guitarist Gina Gleeson KK. “We were united by it. So we just jumped in and did our best. It felt really good. It was a really cool, empowering, creative experience. “
