Keyboardist Brent Midland performed “Blow Away”, “Gimme Some Lovin'” and more at the last concert he played before his tragic death.
The Grateful Dead performed their 1990 summer tour in the Buffalo area on July 16th, a special day for the region. July 16th is Day 716, named after the western New York area code. Previously circulated pro-shot video footage of the concert held at Rich Stadium in Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo, has been newly remastered and recorded by Dead sound engineer Dan Healy for Ultra Matrix recordings. Soundboard recordings were combined with those transferred by audio guru Charlie Miller. The result is a great video for the amazing Grateful Dead show. You can find it below.
guitarist Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir The keyboardist joined the Grateful Dead during the 1990 Buffalo concert. Brent Midland,bassist Phil Lesh and drummers mickey heart and Bill Kreutzman. Sadly, Midland died ten days later from a drug overdose at his home in Lafayette, California, at the premature age of 37. Following the Grateful Dead’s visit to Rich Stadium, the tour ended with two nights in Deer Creek, Indiana and three nights at Chicagoland’s World Music Theater venue.
Brent Midland had some glorious moments at Rich Stadium on July 16, 1990. The keyboardist led his bandmates on the final song, “Blow Away,” which he co-wrote with lyricist John Perry Barlow. Additionally, Brent and Bob Weir co-directed “Man Smart (Woman Smarter)” before Midland joined Phil Lesh on lead vocals on the second set of “Gimme Some Lovin’.”
Other highlights include “Mind Left Body Jam,” which evolved from the pre-Drums version of “Truckin’,” the split between “Sugar Magnolia” and “Sunshine Daydream” to end the second set, ’ and other gorgeous takes. – “Step Uptown Toodeloo”, “The Wheel”, “Rice on the Wharf”, “Brokedown Palace”.
