BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) — The SPCA, which serves Erie County, encourages animal lovers to #GetYourFlirtOn during a two-day “speed dating” event.
Twice a month in July and August, the shelter waives all adoption fees for animals over the age of one.
Potential pet owners can meet dogs, cats, rabbits and even mini pigs in hopes of finding a new best friend.
“It takes just seven minutes for people to fall in love with an animal in a shelter,” said SPCA Communications Manager Bethany Kroc.
So does Sandy Crosky, who today adopted a dog, Diamond, along with his grandchildren.
“Once I ran into a diamond, it just took me,” Crosky said. “She was a very nice person and when we met with her she was just tumbling around and playing with her toys. [my grandkids] Loved her, and I loved her too. ”
A key factor that contributed to the creation of this speed dating event was the need for a space that accommodates abused animals.
“There are a lot of cases of abuse, and those animals are put in cages or kennels,” Kroc said. “The more animals we can get out of the SPCA, the more animals we can bring to our aid.”
Summer is the busiest time for animal shelters. The SPCA is running a #GetYourFlirtOnCampaign through Labor Day, with 50% off the adoption fee every day for animals 1 year and older.
