CEDAR GROVE โ A 16-year-old boy died Saturday night after swimming in a restricted swimming hole called ‘Devil’s Hole’.
Shortly after police announced that a routine patrol had taken them to the swimming area of โโthe Peckman River in Cedar Grove community park, there was a 911 call regarding a swimmer who was unable to surface.
A number of first responders and dive teams from Cedar Grove and surrounding towns were dispatched to the scene. Police said the boy was found and taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The boy’s identity has not been released.

‘Attractive nuisance’
Due to the ledges, jagged rocks and strong currents below the surface, swimming is prohibited due to local ordinances that went into effect in 2018. In 2014, a teenage boy drowned at the swimming hole in what police described as a “charming nuisance.”
Patch reported in 2018 that sewage flowing into rivers that are tributaries of the Passaic River is also a concern.
A 2017 CBS New York report said a large number of teens who saw the video on social media would come to Devil’s Hall.
