This year, Tone Space Theater celebrates its 10th anniversary of producing unique site-specific performances at Silo City. The theater company is known for producing timely, memorable and immersive productions.
The title of my next work is generation, It explores themes of boundaries and covenants as it conducts an archaeological excavation of the rituals, images, and meanings of a society that holds end-of-summer ceremonies within Silo City’s abandoned grain elevator.
Tone Space Theater has developed a unique performance philosophy that explores public rituals and brings nontraditional performers such as farmers, construction workers, military reenactors, marching bands and falconers into large-scale theatrical productions. Their philosophies have earned international acclaim, including an invitation to present their work at the Pfendorf Institute of Lund University in Sweden, selection for the exhibition “Acts of Assembly” as part of the Prague Fourth Festival, an international conference on performing arts and performing arts, and writing in PAJ: A Journal of Performance and Art.
Generation takes audiences back into silocity for a singular performance experience that reimagines the motifs of past productions and pays tribute to performers who have died in productions of the past decade. The show will take place August 4-6 and 11-13, with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. and the show at Silo City – 630 Ohio St. Buffalo, NY 14203 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at tornspacetheater.com.
In addition to the production, Tone Space Theater was also selected for the internationally curated exhibition ‘Acts of Assembly’ as part of the Prague Quarterly. This exhibition explores how theaters and performance spaces function as places of gathering and community, creating connections, facilitating encounters, and as places of social action and cultural creation. Entitled ‘DECADE’, Torn Space’s installation is an archaeological excavation of society and its rituals, asking the question of what can be made from what is left. The installation will open to audiences in Buffalo in September.
Thon Space Theater has definitely made its mark in the world of performance art. Their work in Silo City has been internationally recognized and they have been invited to present at events such as the Prague Fourth Anniversary.
In addition to its latest production, Tone Space Theater will bring back its one-night-only 2022 Silo City installation performance, “Aegis,” to take place on Friday, July 21, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Town Square in front of the newly renovated Buffalo AKG Museum of Art’s Knox Building.

Independence and codependence, love and loss, accidents and miracles, and the common human moment of the here and now unfold on a cosmic timeline. Familiar characters from the Torn Space mythology return to portray families growing in a multi-generational, fictional society. Buffalo-based Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Karl Dennis will provide the text for, appear in, and read his poetry live.
